BCIS Christmas Message

The world has experienced challenges this year that have tested the limits of human understanding. Here in the Philippines, we have also gone through trials which tested our mettle and our faith in God. Through several typhoons and political turmoil, we have remained steadfast in our faith in God and our fellow man. This christmas season, we turn to the message of hope and peace that God has promised through the birth of His Son, Jesus Christ Our Savior -- How He sent His only begotten Son that we may be saved from Sin. Today, that message of hope, peace and salvation rings ever so true not only in our clan, or in this nation, but in the entire world. The celebration of this season by Christians and by some of our brother Filipino Muslims show that there is indeed hope when there appear to be none, peace in its seeming absence, and salvation in the presence of unwavering temptation. This Season, let us all keep our quest for peace strong, and our faith in God stronger. May God continue to shower His blessings upon our clan, our mother nation, and the whole world. Let us not forget that because of Christ's birth, and eventual death at the cross, that the promise of eternal peace and spiritual salvation has come closer to realization. Merry Christmas and a B lessed New Year to all.

President orders rush work in restoring power

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2006 ENERGY from www.gov.ph
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Transmission Corp. (Transco), and the National Electrification Administration (NEA) to fast-track the restoration of electric power in typhoon-battered areas in the Bicol region and Eastern Visayas. At this week’s Cabinet meeting, the President instructed the DOE and NEA to accelerate the restoration of power in Bula, Camarines Sur, before Dec. 16, 2006. She also wants to expedite the return of electricity in areas severely hit by Typhoon Seniang, including Albay, Marinduque, Sorsogon, Biliran, Camarines Sur, Aklan and Samar, according to Cabinet Secretary Ricardo Saludo. He said that the President also instructed the armed forces to provide two helicopters from the Cebu-based Central Command for use of DOE and Transco in transporting manpower, equipment, and structures needed to restore damaged power infrastructure in Samar.Saludo said that with the redoubled efforts by the energy agencies, as of a.m. today (Dec. 15), the status of power, communication and transportation was as follows:
* Fully-repaired damaged structures and equipment in Quezon and Sorsogon provinces.
* 100 percent load restoration in Quezon and Leyte provinces.
* 100 percent power restoration of Transco Lines in Panay and 86 percent in Caticlan-Boracay Line.
* 70 percent load restoration in Mindoro.

PGMA sends off "Caring and Sharing Caravan" to Bicol

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2006 GOVERNMENT MANAGEMENT from www.gov.ph

Some 250 trucks and other vehicles laden with relief goods left for the Bicol region this morning in what was aptly called by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as the government’s "Caring and Sharing Caravan."The caravan, spontaneously organized by civic-minded groups, is a tribute to the theme of the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Cebu that was called off on account of Typhoon Seniang which ravaged most parts of the Visayas over the weekend."I want every Filipino family to know that their government is ready to serve them in times of extreme distress when food, clean water, warm clothing and shelter cannot normally be availed of," the President said in her sendoff statement at the Central Business Park (CBP) along Diosdado Macapagal Ave. in Pasay City."Your President and the entire Cabinet feel your pain and we will do all we can to gather the energies and resources of the nation to help you," she added. It will be recalled that the President agreed that the Summit in Cebu be postponed to January next year despite contrary opinions, as "she doesn’t want to be attending the Summit when the typhoon was ravaging most homes along its path."The President came to the sendoff to check on the schedules and destinations of the trucks in the caravan which was led by the Office of Civil defense (OCD) and the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).Military and police elements escorted the caravan to secure the relief goods for the victims of the typhoon. The President commended all government officials as well as civic spirited leaders of the private sector who have joined the caravan."As this humanitarian effort traverses the disaster areas, giving aid and comfort to our distressed brethren, we symbolize a nation of one heart and one mind, a nation that derives its strength from unity and compassion, from the spirit of bayanihan and damayan," she said. The President wished the convoy Godspeed, saying "I join the nation in their prayers for the comfort of the distressed, the healing of the families and communities that have lost brethren and loved ones in the wake of misfortunes."

Philippines Mudslide (reported from ABC Radio Australia Website)

Last Updated 02/12/2006, 13:08:52

The Philippines National Disaster Co-ordinating Council reports 198 people dead, and another 260 missing, after typhoon Durian blasted through the mid-eastern Philippines with winds of up to two hundred kilometres an hour.

Rescue and retrieval operations are trying to find survivors in several devastated villages as the typhoon moves into the south China sea heading for Vietnam.

Shirley Escalante reports five cities and towns in the mid-eastern Philippines which were badly hit by typhoon Durian have been placed under a state of calamity.

Under Philippine laws, declaring a state of calamity paves the way for the release of calamity funds.

The national government has also released 20 million US dollars for rescue and recovery operations.

Aerial inspections will be conducted, particularly over the Bicol region where a mudslide buried at least six villages.

More rescue teams will head to the region as roads have been cleared.

The Philippine Navy will also bring relief supplies. Typhoon Durian was the eighteenth storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Mudslide Hits Daraga, Sto. Domingo and Legaspi City

A mudslide caused by pyrolclastic debris from Mayon Volcano and triggered by Typhoon Reming caused damages to properties in Daraga, Sto. Domingo and Legaspi City. As of last count, around 300 people are dead or missing as rescue efforts continue in the aforementioned towns.

As of this time, no word yet from our relatives in Bacacay, Albay. It is reported that cellular sites in Bicol are down and that electricity will be out until the 15th of this month.

Letter from Maureen Bernardo

The following letter was e-mailed to the Banares Clan Blogsite Administrator Rodel C. Banares from Maureen Bernardo (bernardo@redzone.com.au):

Dear Rodel,

I have read with interest your family history from the Bicol region. I am the wife of Rondo Banares Bernardo….yes a Banares and have visited your town Back in 1973. How badly are your family affected by this latest volcano/typhoon disaster. We are praying for their safety. I am of the belief that our branch of the Banares (Cornelio) is descended from the first record of your family. He stowed away on a ship after his mother died—he was about 9 years old and finished up in Macau, Hong Kong where he made his own life and dynasty. This knowledge makes me feel concern. Do let me know if the area the family live has been affected badly by this disaster.

MAUREEN BERNARDO

Blogsite Admin's reply:

Hello Maureen,

Thank you for checking out our clan's news and information page. I am sorry to tell you that Albay province has been badly affected by the recent typhoon (International codename "Durian"). For your information, The towns of Daraga, Sto. Domingo and Legaspi have been badly affected by a mudslide yesterday as a result of the continuous rains that the storm brought in. As of last count, almost 300 are presumed dead or missing. As for our town of Bacacay, we have not heard from any of our relatives and friends since after the storm. We have been told that electricity would not be restored before the 15th of this month. Power cables, cellular sites and other telecommunications towers are either out of order or destroyed by the storm. We are continuing to establish communications with our relatives and we will post any updates in our blogsite www.banares-clan.blogspot.com. I am sorry i have not been able to update our blogsite for the past 24+ hours. I have just arrived from Bataan Province to visit my friend's farm and to report on the storm there.

I believe that all BANARES are related one way or another. Please continue to pray for the Bicol Region.

Hoping to hear from you again,

PAALAM, MANONG MAX

A tribute to a great writer, publisher and Filipino by Rodel Banares
Philippine Star Publisher and columnist Max Soliven suffered a fatal stroke at the Narita International Airport in Japan as he was preparing to fly back to his beloved motherland. I best remember Manong Max for his hard-hitting, no nonsense style of writing. He was neither pro-government nor anti-government. He calls a spade a spade and his witty articles and narratives truly capture the essence of his chosen topics. His trademark sanamagan will sorely be missed by his daily readers. I myself prefer to read Manong Max because of the way he sends and manages to get his messages across. As a fellow Filipino, it makes me very proud to know that someone as patently Filipino as Manong Max is well respected by his international peers.

I will always remember him best as a cellmate of the late great Benigno Aquino Jr. in Fort Bonifacio during the dark days of martial law. Max Soliven was imprisoned because he spoke the truth, and that the truth, media men know as gospel truth, is the most dangerous thing one can possess during the dark days of martial law.

After the fall of the dictatorship, he continued on with his mission of truth through information: first with the Inquirer, and then through The Philippine Star. Like it or not, he is well respected by his fellow publishers and columnists, no matter how much his opinions may differ from theirs.

As they say, and as I like to quote every now and then, if one has done something worthy of remembrance, that deed will be his monument. If not, no monument can ever preserve his memeory. I wish now to paraphrase and dedicate the last line of Manong Max's biographical essay Goodbye, Superboy (a Fond Farewell to the Last Romantic) to his memory: Goodbye, Manong Max. I am proud to have known you. And happy to have known you well.

Armas Mong Hawak Ay Pluma
Katotohanan ang iyong tinta
Na isinulat sa pahina ng Kasaysayan
At nakauikit sa aming kamalayan.

Sa iyong pagkawala
Hindi matutuyo ang pluma!
Ipagpapatuloy ng bawat Pilipino
Ang sinimulan mong kabanata.

Katotohanan ang pinuhunan
Katotohanan siyang patuloy na ipaglalaban
Sapagkat ang aral ng iyong paglisan
Ang katotohanan ang siyang nakapagpapalaya!

Hi,
I would like to thank you for setting up the family website. I have been trying for years to gain some info on my family tree but it is hard since I am located in Canada. Maybe you can help me. My grandfather is Eufemio Bañares from Albay and was married to Simplicia Mitra. My dad is Wilhelmino (Willie) Bañares. My brief personal history includes; born in 1974 @ QC, grew up in Mandaluyong, Elementary school at Aquinas School, High school at San Beda College and moved to Winnipeg Manitoba Canada in 1990 with my mom's family. My only recollection of my grandpa's Bicolano relatives was visiting my dad's family in Tabaco Albay when I was 10 years old, took a bath at Ameter Hot Springs(or something >>)and my mom also lived there when she eloped with my dad. Her name is Esperanza Robles. My dad mentioned that they stayed at Tabaco for about a year after I was born.. I also remember having uncles and cousins with surnames like Berces… My grandfather was a guerilla in WWII and was on his way to the US ( via his enlistment with the US Army during the war) when he suddenly passed away. One of my biggest regrets is not inquiring more from my dad and granpa regarding our heritage... I would like to pass on this information to my kids so they will know their family history.
I would appreciate very much if you can direct me or even provide me some information about my dad's family history.

Kind regards,

Kenneth R. Bañares Program Coordinator - Field Director Development Investors Group Financial Services Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada

BACACAY'S NEWEST ATTRACTION: MISIBIS

Reports & pictures from the Skyscraper Forums. Visit their forum site at http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=175804&page=3

LEGAZPI CITY--A world-class beachfront spa resort, with a long stretch of fine white sand and complete with modern facilities, is now in full development in Barangay Misibis, Bacacay, Albay, by prominent Bicolano businessman Elizalde "Zaldy" Co."It's a very strategic and fully nature-packaged beauty resort where one can absolutely feel in one setting as if he is in Palawan, Phuket, Bali, Maldives, Boracay, and Waikiki, or perhaps better," Co said.Dubbed as an architectural structure at its finest, the Misibis Spa Resort and Residences is aimed at being the next world-class tourist destination in the country. It will be boosted by the new international airport that is being planned for construction in the province, particularly in Barangay Alobo in nearby Daraga town. The place offers a panoramic view of the Mayon Volcano, Sula Channel (galleons and ships' sanctuary in times of typhoon), Pototan Cave in Batan Island (known for its teeming terraces of waterfall like contour of pools of water overflowing from its "cauliflower" structure, and its exotic underground rivers), Bac-Man geothermal site and Nag-asu Lake (the "burning" lake of Albay), among other features.Just 20 minutes away from the resort is an underground river called Pighologan Cave.Actually, though the resort will be fully operational by March 2006 yet, many tourists, both local and national have already visited the resort.40 hectaresThe Misibis resort is a 40-hectare beachfront property nestled at the south coast of the Pacific Ocean via a three-km route to the Sula Channel.Co said that though at present the resort has only two big function rooms, it will soon open the following amenities and services: restaurant and bar, poolside bar, lagoons, more function rooms, souvenir shop, sauna and spa, grand main lobby, a chapel, infinity pool, business center, beachfront cabanas, auto terrain vehicles, driving range, indoor games, tennis court, water sport activities, marina, and horseback riding."It's more than a five-star hotel, since right now the construction of two or more big villas and six or more clusters are in the process. People coming here will not only enjoy the tranquil beauty of the beach or other scenic spots that it can offer, but, of course, also the state of being private just like in a hotel," Co explained. He added that just like in any other world-class beach resort, this too, would offer numerous infinity pools where one can appreciate the conducive and exclusive atmosphere of the place.Co said the project entails an initial cost of 250 million pesos, although he admitted that it could further reach up to a billion of pesos for its full development.Ronald Bejerano, senior architect and project manager, added that the proposed project would have a main clubhouse that can accommodate 200 to 300 guests.Five clustered houses surrounding the layered and infinity pools will cascade from the main clubhouse.Cable car will also be constructed, offering a grand panorama of the site and its connecting islands.Total development, including construction of high-end residential, areas will be completed in three years."Generally, construction materials will be local to promote our own product and give value to its competitiveness to imported products, yet some detailed finishing will come from the Asian region.World-classCo, 34, owner of the popular Legazpi Renaissance Garden and Country Club located at the heart of Legazpi City, told the Inquirer that what makes the Misibis resort world-class is its style. It is Filipino-Asian in nature -- although influenced by the prominent beach resorts in Thailand, Indonesia, America, Maldives and some parts in Europe to where he has been. But he denied that it is in many ways a copycat, "for Misibis is largely very Filipino in character"-from the materials being used, the perspectives and designs, the employees, architects, engineers, contractors, interior designers, and of course, the naturalness of the place-which would make every Filipino very proud of."Most of the architects, engineers, contractors, and interior designers that I have employed were previously working abroad. They're that world-class, plus the fact that I let them come with me to other places abroad for them to see the modern and novel trend-setting styles of beach resorts," Co said.As to the materials and equipment utilized, Co revealed that some of them were bought abroad, especially from America."This only refers to the toilet bowls, bath tubs, jacuzzis, tiles, the roofing of the villas and clusters," Co said.As to the interior designs-wood, highly commercialized mineral commodities like pebbles and crafted materials-he stressed that they utilize local yet highly first-class and unique materials to adopt them to the discriminating tastes of tourists."Sometimes if the materials are not available in Tabaco, Albay, we order them from Cebu, Manila and Palawan or in some parts of Asia. So, this is indeed a Filipino-Asian in character. We try to preserve here the dazzling, natural and exotic beauty of Asia," he said.Eco-tourismThe highlight of the resort focuses not just on the said amenities, but also on the "wild side" of the place -- the presence of a wildlife sanctuary. This is in connection with the local government's declaration that most part of Cagraray Island is an eco-tourism zone.Co said the purpose is for other tourists, who can't afford to go to the resort, to at least just roam around the area and experience the exhilarating beauty of the island and commune with nature."Majority cannot afford to come to the resort, but we can't deny them the alluring beauty of the place, so we have thought of developing a wildlife area," the young development-oriented businessman said.He added that since it's world-class, most likely it will be the Class A that can afford to come, but having the eco-tourism area will enable other classes of people to enjoy the place."Somehow the idea here is related to the Phuket, Thailand Beach resort wherein foreigners will have to pay 2,000 dollars while domestic tourists from all over the Philippines will pay only 50 percent. Of course locals will pay discounted rates," Co said.Travel timeTourists interested to visit Misibis may take the route of Sula Channel in Bacacay town, wherein a motorized boat can ferry them across the channel and they can either take a 15-minute jeepney ride or a 25-minute boat ride to the resort.Guests who wish to bring their cars can proceed directly to the Roro Port A and mount their cars onto the barge.Another way is through the Legazpi port on board public sea transport, which is about one-hour drive by water to the resort's private port. Now that there's a road under construction in Barangay Sula going to Barangay Misibis in Cagraray Island, tourists who wish to visit Pototan and Nag-asu Lake in Manito, Albay, will no longer take the main Batan Island area and the long way road just to reach these places. The newly constructed road in Misibis will enable them to take off from Barangay Mosboron and cruise by 40 minutes to Pototan for its awesome underground river-cave.By Gil Francis G.
