PGMA sends off "Caring and Sharing Caravan" to Bicol
Some 250 trucks and other vehicles laden with relief goods left for the Bicol region this morning in what was aptly called by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as the government’s "Caring and Sharing Caravan."The caravan, spontaneously organized by civic-minded groups, is a tribute to the theme of the 12th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Cebu that was called off on account of Typhoon Seniang which ravaged most parts of the Visayas over the weekend."I want every Filipino family to know that their government is ready to serve them in times of extreme distress when food, clean water, warm clothing and shelter cannot normally be availed of," the President said in her sendoff statement at the Central Business Park (CBP) along Diosdado Macapagal Ave. in Pasay City."Your President and the entire Cabinet feel your pain and we will do all we can to gather the energies and resources of the nation to help you," she added. It will be recalled that the President agreed that the Summit in Cebu be postponed to January next year despite contrary opinions, as "she doesn’t want to be attending the Summit when the typhoon was ravaging most homes along its path."The President came to the sendoff to check on the schedules and destinations of the trucks in the caravan which was led by the Office of Civil defense (OCD) and the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).Military and police elements escorted the caravan to secure the relief goods for the victims of the typhoon. The President commended all government officials as well as civic spirited leaders of the private sector who have joined the caravan."As this humanitarian effort traverses the disaster areas, giving aid and comfort to our distressed brethren, we symbolize a nation of one heart and one mind, a nation that derives its strength from unity and compassion, from the spirit of bayanihan and damayan," she said. The President wished the convoy Godspeed, saying "I join the nation in their prayers for the comfort of the distressed, the healing of the families and communities that have lost brethren and loved ones in the wake of misfortunes."

Philippines Mudslide (reported from ABC Radio Australia Website)
The Philippines National Disaster Co-ordinating Council reports 198 people dead, and another 260 missing, after typhoon Durian blasted through the mid-eastern Philippines with winds of up to two hundred kilometres an hour.
Rescue and retrieval operations are trying to find survivors in several devastated villages as the typhoon moves into the south China sea heading for Vietnam.
Shirley Escalante reports five cities and towns in the mid-eastern Philippines which were badly hit by typhoon Durian have been placed under a state of calamity.
Under Philippine laws, declaring a state of calamity paves the way for the release of calamity funds.
The national government has also released 20 million US dollars for rescue and recovery operations.
Aerial inspections will be conducted, particularly over the Bicol region where a mudslide buried at least six villages.
More rescue teams will head to the region as roads have been cleared.
The Philippine Navy will also bring relief supplies. Typhoon Durian was the eighteenth storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Mudslide Hits Daraga, Sto. Domingo and Legaspi City
As of this time, no word yet from our relatives in Bacacay, Albay. It is reported that cellular sites in Bicol are down and that electricity will be out until the 15th of this month.
Letter from Maureen Bernardo
Dear Rodel,
I have read with interest your family history from the Bicol region. I am the wife of Rondo Banares Bernardo….yes a Banares and have visited your town Back in 1973. How badly are your family affected by this latest volcano/typhoon disaster. We are praying for their safety. I am of the belief that our branch of the Banares (Cornelio) is descended from the first record of your family. He stowed away on a ship after his mother died—he was about 9 years old and finished up in Macau, Hong Kong where he made his own life and dynasty. This knowledge makes me feel concern. Do let me know if the area the family live has been affected badly by this disaster.

Blogsite Admin's reply:
Hello Maureen,
Thank you for checking out our clan's news and information page. I am sorry to tell you that Albay province has been badly affected by the recent typhoon (International codename "Durian"). For your information, The towns of Daraga, Sto. Domingo and Legaspi have been badly affected by a mudslide yesterday as a result of the continuous rains that the storm brought in. As of last count, almost 300 are presumed dead or missing. As for our town of Bacacay, we have not heard from any of our relatives and friends since after the storm. We have been told that electricity would not be restored before the 15th of this month. Power cables, cellular sites and other telecommunications towers are either out of order or destroyed by the storm. We are continuing to establish communications with our relatives and we will post any updates in our blogsite www.banares-clan.blogspot.com. I am sorry i have not been able to update our blogsite for the past 24+ hours. I have just arrived from Bataan Province to visit my friend's farm and to report on the storm there.
I believe that all BANARES are related one way or another. Please continue to pray for the Bicol Region.
Hoping to hear from you again,

Rodel Banares' Tribute to Soliven in Philstar.com
Friday, November 24, 2006
PAALAM, MANONG MAX
I will always remember him best as a cellmate of the late great Benigno Aquino Jr. in Fort Bonifacio during the dark days of martial law. Max Soliven was imprisoned because he spoke the truth, and that the truth, media men know as gospel truth, is the most dangerous thing one can possess during the dark days of martial law.
After the fall of the dictatorship, he continued on with his mission of truth through information: first with the Inquirer, and then through The Philippine Star. Like it or not, he is well respected by his fellow publishers and columnists, no matter how much his opinions may differ from theirs.
As they say, and as I like to quote every now and then, if one has done something worthy of remembrance, that deed will be his monument. If not, no monument can ever preserve his memeory. I wish now to paraphrase and dedicate the last line of Manong Max's biographical essay Goodbye, Superboy (a Fond Farewell to the Last Romantic) to his memory: Goodbye, Manong Max. I am proud to have known you. And happy to have known you well.
Manong Max

Armas Mong Hawak Ay Pluma
Katotohanan ang iyong tinta
Na isinulat sa pahina ng Kasaysayan
At nakauikit sa aming kamalayan.
Sa iyong pagkawala
Hindi matutuyo ang pluma!
Ipagpapatuloy ng bawat Pilipino
Ang sinimulan mong kabanata.
Katotohanan ang pinuhunan
Katotohanan siyang patuloy na ipaglalaban
Sapagkat ang aral ng iyong paglisan
Ang katotohanan ang siyang nakapagpapalaya!

E-Mail from Ken Banares of Manitoba, Canada
Hi,
I would like to thank you for setting up the family website. I have been trying for years to gain some info on my family tree but it is hard since I am located in Canada. Maybe you can help me. My grandfather is Eufemio Bañares from Albay and was married to Simplicia Mitra. My dad is Wilhelmino (Willie) Bañares. My brief personal history includes; born in 1974 @ QC, grew up in Mandaluyong, Elementary school at Aquinas School, High school at San Beda College and moved to Winnipeg Manitoba Canada in 1990 with my mom's family. My only recollection of my grandpa's Bicolano relatives was visiting my dad's family in Tabaco Albay when I was 10 years old, took a bath at Ameter Hot Springs(or something >>)and my mom also lived there when she eloped with my dad. Her name is Esperanza Robles. My dad mentioned that they stayed at Tabaco for about a year after I was born.. I also remember having uncles and cousins with surnames like Berces… My grandfather was a guerilla in WWII and was on his way to the US ( via his enlistment with the US Army during the war) when he suddenly passed away. One of my biggest regrets is not inquiring more from my dad and granpa regarding our heritage... I would like to pass on this information to my kids so they will know their family history.
I would appreciate very much if you can direct me or even provide me some information about my dad's family history.
Kind regards,
Kenneth R. Bañares Program Coordinator - Field Director Development Investors Group Financial Services Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada
